The summer between grade 8 and 9 I was having some serious anxiety about going to high school and I thought that I would need a new look to start high school with. Every day I begged my mother to let me dye my hair a new colour to start things off right. Every day she said NO and every day I begged more and more. Well I guess I finally wore her down and the day before I started back to school I bought a box of hair dye and my girlfriend and I took to the bathroom to start my transformation. Well needless to say the colour turned out so red that I looked a little bit like Ronald McDonald. Liek Rihanna but nowhere near as cute. Seeing that it was a long weekend Monday there was nowhere to go to get it fixed. SO off to highschool I went with HORRIBLE hair. Thank goodness I didn't get an I TOLD YOU SO from mom.

First year of high school, I went to get my hair dyed for the first time and i was super excited! When i got out of the salon (WONDERFULLY HIGHLIGHTED!) my forehead started to itch and get red. after about 24 hours my face and neck was so swollen I had to go to the hospital. It turned out that i was allergic to the dye. I had to get all my hair shaved off because the hair irritated my skin so bad! It sucked!
I'm happy to say my hair has since grown back long and I've experimented with everything from red, browns to bleach blonde. I agree with Nebby, Hair should be fun and an extension of your personality!

I remember when i was about 11 or 12...i used to go to my cousin who was a stylist who owned a shop. Sh had done my mother's hair and mine for some time so I was very comfortable with her and her abilities. Because of my age my mom always made me get styles styles that weren't "too grown" looking like candy curls, flat twists ect. So one day I asked my cousin to crimp my hair....well she did! So as i'm sitting there and she crimps about four section of my hair fine no problems but with the next peice of hair I began to hear my hair sizzle! Being so naivie and young i thought nothing of it then i start to feel this excruciating burning! Like my hair was hot fire! I jerked my head away from her and immediately tears began to roll down my face and i wiped them away so my cousin wouldnt see me crying, then she yells out SORRY! Somehow I managed to deal with the pain but when my mom picked me up my cousin didnt tell her how she burnt the hell out of my scalp...nor did I. But two weeks later inbetween visits to the salon I asked my mom to wash my hair...she discovered this massive scab....she was like "what happened to you? did she burn you?!" I replied yes and my mom was like "WHY DIDN'T YOU LET HER KNOW?!" and I replied "cause I didnt want to hurt her feelings".....lol my mom was like "nooooooo baby you always tell them if the are burning you/ not doing you hair how you like"...it was the WORST burning feeling ever but i was happy that she didnt burn my hair of completely.

Mine is simple..I went to Carols by Candlelight...lots of jolly old folks singing and it was Christmas time..mind you in Africa..it was amazing, we rode the choo choo train and everything was stunning. We all stood at the amphitheatre and started singing "Once in Royals Davids City"..and i was like yeaaaahhhh bwoyi.."dis my fav carol right hurrr" till someone said.."I smell burnt hair"..my sister turned and looked at me and screamed..the old bat behind me got so into the carols she lost control of the candle bit and lit my shit on fire..my entire (plait) ..aka braid was torched.
I was 9..I got my hurr back..i now hate over zealous carolers..especially candle holding ones.

I will never forget my worst hair experience! It was back in 2006, my highschool days. Everyone was talking about how they were going to get their hair weaved for picture day. I had just got my first job and could finally afford to do it up so I said hey, let me join in the club! Mistake number one!I went to the hair store and bought myself two packages of premium straight 14 inch hair one black package, and one bronzish color. I was all excited and couldnt wait to get my hair done by a professional hair dresser. The night before I went to the hair dresser I permed my hair thinkin that it would be easier for the hair dresser, not expecting the unthinkable to happen. The day finally came and I was like HEYY today Im doing my hair (look hot for the pictures). So I get to the hair dresser, sat down in the chair and my hair dresser says "I think it would be nice if I did an open part with the broze color on top, but were going to have to dye your hair" WHAT DID I REALLY KNOW, I said ok. After she dyed my hair it came out looking so nice, I was like ok, she weaved up my hair for me I look so good! Three days later I noticed a whole bunch of bumps around my forehead line where she had braided my hair, and the top of my head stared to itch!!! I had to take it out immediately!! Not ONLY did my hairline disappear from the braids being so tight, the top part of my head fell out because I had permed and dyed my hair within the same 24hrs. So my picture day consisted of a jacked up hairline, a short patch of bronze hair, and another dreadful picture day, which to this day my highschool friends still call me"rough patch".

I call this the attack of the single braids..I was like 13 and my mom decided to get my hair single braided before school started, I was in grade 8 and I hated the fact that I still had to do this ugly hairstyle, anyways, I went to my neighbours house (this african lady who did cheap braids) and let her do my hair, I noticed that she was using nail glue to bond the end of the braids..I didnt say anything because she was the professional, obviously she knew what was best...A month goes by and its time to take out my hair, I notice that My hair is glued to the braid...I didnt know what to do...like was there a way to cut it so that I didnt ruin my hair...I didnt know I just knew that this was going to be a definate battle..I started soaking my hair in the bath tub hopin that it would work...not a damn thing happened, so eventually I just got fed up and started cutting...I said to myself, this isnt that bad...only to realize when I was finished I had cut off so much of my real hair, I now looked like a new born baby who was struggling to grow hair that got shocked by a bolt of lightening..My hair was on so many different levels that some parts could even be caught to redo a single braid...I was so mad I couldnt even put my hair in a pony tail because all the strands in my head couldnt catch...that had to be the worst hair drama I ever had...

-- Nebby,
Whats good girl? what you know about weaves lil Moroccan chick? lol j/k j/k. I just thought I'd slide through and tell my story one time
Breifly,
I went to the weave store and bought my hair. I told the chick that worked there I'd hit her up if she was serious about doin a sew in. I usually don't even do sew in's, but I figured I was goin to Boston and I can't afford to have slippage in the bedroom. I dont mind tellin my dude I wear weaves, but when we're scratchin and tusslin in the sheets and he pulls out some tracks..heyyy..lol, I met up with her the next day, little did I know, she went to the club the night before. nevertheless, I met her at 8am, I told her I wanted a half sew in and two braids on each side for the sew in.I specified not to connect the side braids. Now if she was sleepy mind you, she coulda easily said, "Can we reschedule?". No, she pushed it through like a soldier. Nebby, this bitch (I say bitch because of biased circumstance) braided my hair in the biggest fucking braids I've ever seen. Not only that, she ignored my request and connected the two braids on the side with the back. I knew this was gonna be some fucked up weave stylin before I even looked in the mirror. after 6 hours later of doing a damn half sew in, she shows her mom and she has the nerve to say, "Isn't this cute?" . I went in the bathroom and wanted to vomit. My sides were stickin out like a damn cactus, the back of my hair was hella big and puffy, the side braids were so damn loose they touched my ears, I was going out of town in 5 days and this stupid unprofessional hair chick eff'd my hair up. I dont even cry. I hate emotional chicks, But I started thinking about how sore my wallet was gonna be. Im not, not going to pay anyone for their services. Good or Bad. You know what? I lost $120, but I lost time as well. I cried my fucking eyes out the whole way home, I could barely see because of my tears. ugh! it was awful. I was determined to get home and take out my hair asap. I took out out that damn disaster and cut and glued each track like I shoulda done in the first place. I will never trust anyone to do my hair again. I do mine well anyway. hell, you can't tell I have a strand of fake hair on my head. Maybe my ethnicity, Im Filipino and Creole, So folks assume Im Ethiopian or Eritrean or Egyptian anyway. However. I dont trust anyone no matter where they work, to do my hair. For more pics of me and my hair, they are all over my blog which I posted below. Hope you laughed if nothing else

*sigh* I'm gonna do my best to get through this b/c it was slightly traumatic... Soo the summer of grade 12, i had a weave put in as usual. Two or three weeks later i decided to take it out. My hair appointment was that same day and the only person home was my grandmother. I LOVE this woman with all my soul but her eye sight isnt very good. Anywho, while she was cutting the tracks off, she got distracted or whatever and she actually started cutting of MY BRAIDED hair along with the weave
-_____- she was almost at the top of my head before i noticed what was happening b/c i'm a dumbass.Thats how i ended up having 80% of my hair cut off wit the crown bieng at its usual length. I swear I wanted to die as overdramatic as that sounds.
I cried that night and my dad and my brother cracked jokes all day about how i should go to the barbershop with them to have it shaped up . Assholes. I ended up having to cut the remaining hair off b/c it just looked silly. I didnt have enough to do a sew in so i just had to wear really big earrings for like six months... and trust me nebby I am NOT as cute without hair. On the bright side, it did allow me to go natural and stop with the relaxers which is a big plus even if it'll take me another five years to get back the length i had before.

I still love, love love you grandma mina, even if you're all the way back in Sierra leone now. I'll just never let you near my head again...

If it's okay, I'm gonna do this on behalf of my sister. She deserves this, no question. When she was in the 9th grade or so, she and I both got our first weaves. It was that synthetic shit from Sally's glued in with the gray bottle with the red cap. Also known as, the worst stuff to EVER put into your head. So this flamboyant little chocolate drop puts the tracks in for us and we enjoy it for as long as we can. Couple weeks later, that shit started itching and scratching like nobody's business. We can't find Mr. Chocolate Drop to take it down so our mom (may she rest in peace, love you Mama!) tries to do it. First things first: the boy put it right on the scalp which I now know is a HUGE no-no. My mama didn't know what to do so she grabbed some corn oil [yes, to cook with] and started trying to yank that mess out. My poor, lovely sister had patches all over her head. It was in the early 2000s that this happened and she struggled through that for quite a while. Due to our lack of education on proper hair maintenance and constant bad weaves, she just started to grow her hair back in properly this year. I'm so happy for her but this hair could be an even greater boost for her. Thanks for the opportunity! :)

Mine is very recent... and rather unfortunate due to my lack of being happy with what I was born with.

I'm Cape Verdean its a mix of Portuguese and African American people. So my hair is naturally curly, verrry thick and it was down to my butt and was gorgeous I had even won best hair for my highschool graduating class. (not bragging thats just to give you an idea of how nice my hair ONCE was 0__o )

But then I cut it all off & had it straight most of the time -_-
Once it grew to my shoulders, I was going through my straight hair phase and after being sick of straightening it myself I was getting highlights put in and was told about the Keratin treatment. I was very adamant about being able to wear it curly and she told me that all it would do is tame the frizz but the curl would be there. It sounded like the perfect antidote, so I agreed.

Well when I washed my hair I literally had stringy straight strands and no curl. After doing the research and talking to different stylists I found out she put in a Brazilian straightener. I was so devastated that my curls that everyone had always admired were now gone. Oh but it gets worse...

So later in the year I went to my older sister a beauty student & asked about a curly perm to help bring my curl back. Well she didn't do it right & I had very straight pieces. So I went back and she re-permed it.

Continued-
A week later, I was combing my hair and I hear this snarling noise it was my hair literally BREAKING off as I combed it I cried to my mother about how badly my hair was breaking. Even when I ran my FINGERS through my head it was coming out. All of my highlights & more broke off. Now, the top half of my hair is shorter than when I 1st cut it. It still breaks off a little bc its so weak. The bottom part is a lil longer. Ive yet to find a product that helps strengthen my hair and I dont want to cut it bc Ive been wanting my length back. So I am stuck with short choppy pieces and STILL no natural curl like I once had, only damaged broken hair =/

Kinda sucks, a lot, but I've learned a lot from it and will never get a Keratin treatment or perm again. Especially in that order.

Sorry for it being rather wordy but thanks for listening!

ps I was reading the other stories and it's really nice of that girl to enter for her sister!

Hey, My name is Janet. This happened when I was in grade 7. I went to a hair dresser to get my hair permed. Everything was fine until one day my hair started falling out. I had to cut it all off because it was uneven. When I went to school the next day kids made fun of me. The other story I have is about a family member who said she could weave hair. So I let her weave my hair, Big Mistake because you could see the whole middle of my head. The next day I had to go to a wedding shower. I was so mad. My e-mail is baby_jj77@hotmail.com

Here's my hair horror story. I am an Arab woman, we are known for our lusciously long thick dark curly hair. Being frustrated with my curls, and having to do so much to maintain my hair, I stupidly decided to buy an at home relaxing kit. I imagined beautiful straight hair that needed very little attention, just wash n go! As I was removing the relaxer from my hair, chunks began to fall out from every spot around my scalp. I have never been so scared and filled with panic in my life!! This happened a little over 5 years ago, since then my hair has thickened up again, but it is not at the length it used to be, thus, I've been wearing hair extensions for some time now. I recently moved to T.O. and have been looking for a great place to get exensions put in. Winning this will not only put my past horrid experience away but it'll give me a great boost of confidence in my new city!

I always had what most would say is "Good Hair" , and summer before grade 10 I did the unthinkable to my hair. I permed it with the HARSHEST type of perm you can use ! For the record , I'm mixed so my hair does not need that amount of strength but my hairdresser at the time insisted that was what I needed. Before I knew it Clumps of hair where coming out of my head and my once long to the middle of my back hair was almost what seemed bald is some places , I freaked out ! I had never even got a hair cut before , so that was a life time of growth literally ! I had no choice but to chop off my hair as short as can be , i hated it and i was teased about it for ever ! It really ruined my early highschool experience :( Kids are so mean ! haha . Well after that disaster my hair has never been the same and never grown back to its original lengths :( It damaged my hair permanently , and only now over 5 YEARS LATER has it made any progress :( . As a woman we have all had horror hair stories , but mine was more then the fact that my hair was ruined my entire confidence level has been shattered since that day and it haunts me :(

My hair problems all started when I was born. I was born premature, I only weighed 1 pound 6 ounces. They had to shave my head so they could put needles in my head. So they could give me medication. Then when I was in grade 7. I went to a hair dresser to get my hair permed. Everything was fine until one day my hair started falling out. I had to cut it all off because it was uneven.
